It’s New Year’s day 2014 and I’ve been fasting all day. Absolutely not one single thing to eat except green tea and lemon water. I just did a very long guided Breath Work meditation session and had a very powerful spiritual experience…I know all that sounds really weird right? I understand. A much younger version of myself would give me a wedgie and a bitch slap if he knew I was writing this let alone putting it out there for the world to read. I’m really hoping this isn’t just some weird Jerry Maquire moment…

I’ve spent the last few years on a strange and wonderful spiritual journey. It’s not something I planned or even really wanted in my life and to go into detail would take way too long for this post. To be completely honest I’ve been somewhat embarrassed to talk about it. Usually I think that other peoples opinions of me are really none of my business and I live my life the way I see best without regard to how anyone else feels about it, but even I can’t help but feel slightly shy when I use the word spirituality…

Last night I was hired to take a good size group of people through a guided Breath Work class at a New Years eve party. While there I couldn’t help but realize this strange and beautiful direction my business and life has taken. How did I become someone that helps people unblock stuck emotions, access their hearts, and find gratitude in their lives?

One of the first things I had to do was let go of my own preconceived ideas of what my life is supposed to look like and who I think I’m supposed to be. Then I just went with what feels right in my heart. I surrendered to the the idea that I’m just going to help people. As many people as I can, everyday and every way that I can…and then see what happens…see what comes in to my life. Trust that the universe has my back and that I’ll be taken care of…and so here I am…I am.

The other thing I did was open myself up to new experiences. Things I thought were completely silly or didn’t believe in and amazing things happened. My suggestion for you is to try something new this year. Something you would never think you would do or don’t really know anything about and just see what happens. I’d love for you to come try one of my classes. I could try and explain what will happen to you for days in just one short class or session and it still wouldn’t even scratch the surface. You really just have to come see for yourself.

How to Remove Fear, Stress, and Anxiety in Less than 30 Minutes

I was sitting in a business meeting when I got a text that read “Explosion at the Boston Marathon!”

I tried to shrug it off as if maybe it was a small and insignificant event like a maybe a telephone pole transformer blew up. Maybe this person is just being dramatic…

Then another text came in… “Two Bombs went off at the Boston Marathon”

I let out a small gasp of air and felt my chest tighten and didn’t breath at all. Instantly I remembered seeing my cousin’s facebook posts that morning of her and her husband dressed in running gear with numbers proudly displayed on their chests. And even worse; photos of their kids holding up signs to cheer them on. Holy shit!

Then I noticed that I hadn’t taken a breath in what was probably a short time but felt like an eternity.

That’s what fear does. It steals your breath and you don’t even realize it.

When I tell people I teach a “Breath Work” class what usually follows is a sarcastic response; “I already know how to breathe!” and then I fight back my own sarcastic urge which sounds like, “Not if I put you in a choke hold!”

I understand the confusion and resistance to the unknown. I always tell my clients and friends “There’s no growth in the comfort zone.” The simple and honest fact is that it’s imposible to go through life without having some difficult moments.

Bad things happen to even the best of people.

So how do we process and deal with these moments? Most of us don’t. We blow them off, stuff them down, and pretend that they didn’t happen or they don’t affect us as much as they really do.

WE GET STUCK. The bad moments can stay with us and sometimes come out sideways. I don’t know why I reacted to that situation like that…sound familiar?

Breath Work is the most effective tool I’ve ever found to get unstuck, become happier and unlock my full potential.

I invite you to come and have a new experience in your life…

What is Breath Work and why do I need it?

Breath work is an active meditation that is very simple and will transform your life in a very short amount of time. It’s a big statement, I know, but I believe it to be one hundred percent true.

In today’s stressed out society, if there is anyone who doubts the benefits of having a meditation practice, all the evidence is right there. We all need meditation for some reason or another. In my own personal journey I struggled for a long time to find a way to meditate that worked for me.

I’m a big believer in Mind, Body, and Spirit. The physical aspect, I’ve handled for quite some time as I’ve been in the fitness industry for over twenty years now. The rest has been another story.

I’ve tried so many ways to meditate and quiet my mind that I’ve lost count; I’ve sat on a pillow in the Buddhist Center while trying to quiet my mind but I could never block out the noise of my own mind…“My back is killing me…I think my bottom leg is asleep…how are all these people doing this?

You get my point.

Once I discovered breath work it was an instant game changer. It’s easy to learn and practice on your own (although I like to breathe with a class at least once a week because the experience is heightened when done in a group and guided by an instructor).

I think one of the reasons breath work is so effective is because it’s active meditation. In other words, you breathe actively with a three-part breath for a certain length of time yet you do this LYING DOWN which really allows you to focus on the breath and not have to worry about your posture or body.

When we learn to breathe in a new way, we learn to manage our emotions and our mind and that’s no small thing. Medical science has proven that deep diaphragmatic breathing helps woman in labor manage the extreme pain and emotions of childbirth so why would we not want to learn to use this in our everyday lives? It seems like a no brainer yet here we are walking around on autopilot, breathing shallow, day in and day out.

In addition to the breath work session, at the end I will guide the class through a gratitude meditation known as an emotional flood, taught to me by Tony Robbins. It is a surefire way for you to leave with a massive smile on your face.

“The bottom line is breath is the fastest, cheapest, and most effective way to increase your awareness and connect with the energy of the universe.” ~ David Elliot author of The Reluctant Healer and Healing.

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” ~ Tony Robbins

JP’s $50 Gluten-free Meatballs a.k.a Amaze-Balls!!

I know what you’re thinking…Holy shit! Those Meat Balls better be Amaze-balls for $50!!
And yes, they are. They don’t really have to cost fifty dollars either. You can do it much cheaper if you buy the ingredients somewhere other than Whole Foods, a.k.a Whole Pay-Check, or if you don’t use organic grass-fed meat and you don’t mind eating hormones and whatever else it is they’re putting in livestock these days. Maybe I’ve just watched too many damn documentaries and seen too many sad Facebook photos to buy anything but grass-fed meat products. Probably my guilt ridden Catholic up brining.

You can also make a smaller batch, but for me personally if I’m going to go to all the trouble of making meatballs I’m going to invite people over or I want lots of leftovers for the week.

Also, if I didn’t tell you that these meatballs were gluten-free there’s absolutely know way you’d never know. When most people eat my gluten-free food they have no idea that it’s gluten-free. And for me, that’s important -the gluten-free food has to be equally good or better than it’s non gluten-free counterpart or else I don’t want it.

There are a few ingredients that are massively important that aren’t in this photo of ingredients but feel free to enjoy the photo anyway…

Now here is what you need:

1 lb ground veal
1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground pork
3 slices Udi’s gluten-free white bread
1 1/2 cups of coconut milk (You can use also, almond milk or rice milk or regular milk…I don’t give a shit what milk you use)
3 eggs
1 cup grated parmesan, plus more for garnish
1 cup grated pecorino
1/3 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped, plus more for garnish
2 tbsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper
3 small cloves of garlic, minced
2 cups Bob’s Redmill Gluten-free all purpose flour
1/3 cup grapeseed oil

If possible I like to have all my ingredients chopped, measured, prepped and ready to go before I combine anything. So Mince the garlic, chop the parsley and the Udi’s bread.

After you have all of your chopping complete, CLEAN YOUR KNIFE AND PUT IT AWAY!! Don’t ever leave a dirty knife lying on the counter like a knuckle head.

Real cooks clean as they work.

Next, combine all meats in a big mixing bowl like so…

I use my CLEAN HANDS because I don’t have a big fancy Kitchen Aid Blender…but now you know what you can get me for my birthday…

It should look like this when your done..

Next you can add your bread, milk, eggs, cheese, parsley, salt, pepper, and garlic and mix on a medium-low speed for 1 minute or use your damn hands for as long as it takes.

it should end up looking like this…

Have your two cups (Or more if needed) of gluten-free flour spread out in a broiler pan or cookie sheet or whatever you have.

Scoop out 1/8-cup portions (You don’t need to measure them…it’s meatballs for god sakes) just make them golfball size and gentle roll between your hands until you have a nice round meatball.

NOTE: whatever size you do make, try to be consistent and make them all the same size so they cook evenly.

Roll it gently around in the flour and move on to the next one because you got more work to do. Stop being a perfectionist with the shape -you’re just going to eat it anyway.

Now get the grapeseed oil in a large skillet and place heat on medium. Add the balls and cook until golden brown. About 8-10 min. The internal temperature should be about 155 degrees. Your probably going to have to do several batches because we are making a shitload of meatballs for guests or leftovers… either way you can’t go wrong.

NOTE: I use fold a few paper napkins and put them on a plate, then place the cooked meatballs on the napkins to get rid of some of the excess oil.

I think a simple marinara like Italian canned tomatoes, chopped and simmered for thirty minutes with a little salt is perfect but I’ve also been known to use Trader Joe’s Vodka Sauce if I have a jar lying around.

Then you want to pour some sauce over about 5-6 meatballs on plate. Garnish with parmesan and parsley..then serve. NO PASTA you fat bastard!! real Italians don’t eat pasta with their meatballs that’s a fat american creation.

This should make about 50 meatballs. That’s a buck a ball!! (They’re not really that expensive) You can also cut this recipe down easily if you don’t want to make that much. Get 1/3 lb of the each of the meats and you do the math on the rest…I’m starving writing this.

The Greatest Yoga Mat Ever Made

I have a deep dark secret…I love shopping online and getting deliveries at my house. It’s like a year round Christmas surprise wrapped in a brown cardboard box. Also, I have a terrible memory and I completely forget that I ordered something until I see that cardboard present waiting outside my door. So it’s kind of like someone else is buying me presents…until the bill comes.

When I first pulled the Vernice Vita Cadillac Yoga Mat from the box I was a little shocked by how light it is. I’ve been using the Manduka mat for the last 10 years and it’s quite heavy. I unrolled it and laid down on it. I was really impressed by how it felt but I tend to get excited about new things so I wanted to put it through the paces first. Well, it didn’t take long before my wife who is five months pregnant came in and laid down on it.

Wifey: “Oh babe this is nice, I could sleep on this!”

Me: “Well, you are half Japanese -you like to sleep on the floor.

Wifey: “Babe, will you please stretch me? Just a little? I am carrying your baby you know.

Me: “The jury’s still out on that.

(She’s really working this baby angle but I decided to stretch her regardless.)

Anyway, right away I noticed how much better it felt on my knees. Bamm! that’s all I needed to love this mat. Stretching clients a few hours everyday and my knees tend to hurt at the end of the day.

I used this mat in David Elliot’s two day level 1 Breathwork Teacher training at The Hub Yoga studio in West LA. Sitting on mats and blankets on hardwood for eight hours straight and I was so glad that I had this mat. A few people were envious…well, as envious as spiritual seekers will allow themselves to be..

My only complaint about this mat is that it’s just a tad short when I’m lying on my back my heals hang off which is really me being picky. I’m 5’10 so If you’re my height or taller I recommend getting the longer version they make.

I could go on forever about how awesome this mat is but you shouldn’t take my word for it. Instead you should get one and check it out yourself.

I asked the Vernice Vita company if we could do some type of discount offer and they said yes!! You can get $10 off any mat they sell.

Hey, $10 is two lattes at Starbucks or one kick ass burrito my friends.

Here’s the discount link: Venice Vita Cadillac Yoga Mat

and here’s a silly video of me, the mat, and my dogs.
